Abstract

Globalization has brought significant changes to the dynamics of individual life, increasing the complexity of psychological, social, and cultural issues faced by clients in counseling services. However, modern counseling practice is still dominated by a universal approach that tends to neglect local socio-cultural contexts, creating a gap between theoretical approaches and clients’ actual needs. This situation highlights the urgency of developing a more contextual counseling approach through the integration of local wisdom. Based on this, this study aims to examine and synthesize various research findings related to the integration of local wisdom in modern counseling practice to obtain a more comprehensive and integrated conceptual understanding. This study employed a qualitative approach using a literature review method. Data were collected through a review of various scientific sources, such as journals, books, and relevant academic documents, and were then analyzed thematically through a process of identifying, categorizing, and synthesizing the research findings. Research findings indicate that the integration of local wisdom plays a crucial role in enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of counseling services. Based on these studies, approaches grounded in cultural values are considered better equipped to meet clients’ needs within their sociocultural contexts compared to universal approaches. Furthermore, this integration contributes to personal, social, academic, and career development through the internalization of values such as cooperation, responsibility, harmony, and moral awareness. This approach also offers a holistic perspective that integrates psychological, social, and cultural dimensions, addressing the limitations of conventional counseling that does not fully consider the client’s cultural context. Thus, the integration of local wisdom not only strengthens culturally responsive counseling practices but also supports the preservation of local cultural values amid globalization.
