Abstract

This study examines the relevance of Sumbang Duo Baleh, a Minangkabau local wisdom, in modern counseling practices for shaping the character of the younger generation. There have been shifts in behavioral patterns across generations influenced by digitalization, globalization, and the weakening of socio-cultural control, which potentially erode traditional values. The purpose of this study is to analyze how the values embedded in Sumbang Duo Baleh can be integrated into modern counseling approaches to support character development. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through field studies, including observations and interviews with guidance and counseling teachers as well as students, and supported by literature studies from relevant sources. The findings indicate that although there has been a noticeable decline in manners, respect, and social awareness among students, elements of Sumbang Duo Baleh such as politeness, empathy, and self-control are still present in some individuals. The study also found that the main challenge lies in adapting these traditional values to the characteristics of Generation Z, who tend to prefer flexible digital-based communication and are less receptive to rigid norms. Modern counseling approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and digital counseling platforms, have proven effective in bridging this gap when combined with culturally rooted values. Sumbang Duo Baleh remains relevant as an ethical foundation in modern counseling; however, its implementation requires adaptive, contextual, and technology-integrated strategies. This integration contributes to the development of a morally grounded, socially aware generation capable of facing contemporary challenges.
