Abstract

This study is grounded in the cultural diversity of Indonesia, which calls for therapeutic approaches that are sensitive to local values. In this context, the research examines the potential of Kato Nan Ampek, a traditional Minangkabau philosophy, as a culturally responsive basis for ethical counseling dialogue. While previous studies on multicultural counseling have largely emphasized general cultural competence, limited attention has been given to the integration of specific local wisdom such as Kato Nan Ampek into counseling practices. This study aims to explore how the values embedded in Kato Nan Ampek can be incorporated into multicultural therapy. A qualitative Systematic Literature Review was employed to synthesize relevant literature on multicultural counseling, character development, and Minangkabau cultural principles. The findings indicate that the four dimensions of Kato Nan Ampek Kato Mandaki, Kato Malereang, Kato Mandata, and Kato Manurun not only function as forms of linguistic etiquette but also shape ethical and empathetic communication in counseling settings. The analysis suggests that the application of these principles enables counselors to adjust their language in accordance with the client's social context, which may help reduce potential cultural bias and misinterpretation, while fostering a more supportive therapeutic environment. Overall, integrating Kato Nan Ampek into counseling practice offers a culturally grounded approach that contributes to the development of ethical interaction and supports clients' psychological well-being in a multicultural context.
