Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of malapiak randah communication and its implications for adolescents’ self-concept in Minangkabau. Adolescents are in a phase of identity formation and are greatly influenced by their communication environment, whether within the family, the community, or social media. Malapiak randah, as a Minangkabau cultural value, emphasizes humility, politeness, and self-control in communication. This study employs a literature review method by collecting data from various sources, such as books, journals, and previous research. The findings indicate that the value of malapiak randah has two implications for adolescents’ self-concept. On one hand, this value can foster a polite, adaptable character in adolescents and enable them to maintain harmonious social relationships. However, on the other hand, if applied excessively, this value can hinder self-expression, lower self-confidence, and potentially lead to social anxiety. Furthermore, the influence of globalization and social media has also shifted adolescents’ communication patterns toward greater openness and expressiveness. This creates a conflict between traditional cultural values and the need for self-actualization. Therefore, a balanced understanding is required in applying cultural values to support the development of a positive self-concept in adolescents.
